Vampira

35. VAMPIRA (OLD DRACULA)

If You Liked Young Frankenstein
You'll Love Old Dracula!

Released: 1974
Director: Clive Donner (What's New Pussycat, Maxwell Smart and the Nude Bomb).
Starring: David Niven, Teresa Graves, Peter Bayliss, Jennie Linden and Nicky Henson.

The synopsis goes something like this ...

An ageing Count Dracula (Niven), who is forced to host tours of his castle to get new victims, attempts to revive his long-lost love, Vampira. He sets out to collect blood from the bevy of Playboy Playmates staying at his castle. However, one of the Playmates whose blood is drained is black, turning the revived Vampira into a black woman.

Something to sink your teeth into ...

The film was attempting to cash in on the name recognition of Young Frankenstein (1974) when Vampira was renamed Old Dracula for its North American release. The two films were shown back-to-back as a double bill in some theatres. With its anti-black sentiment, it doesn't sound the most politically-correct film. Even for the early '70s. The star, Niven, was of course an ageing Sir James Bond in 007 spoof Casino Royale (1967).
