WANTED: Two thrill-seeking reporters, brains optional, looking to dig up the story of the century
Genre: Comedy/Horror Director: Rudy De Luca (debut). Starring:
Jeff Goldblum as Jack Harrison,
Joseph Bologna as Dr. Malavaqua,
Ed Begley Jnr as Gil Turner,
Geena Davis as Odette, and Donald Gibb as The Wolfman.
The synopsis goes something like this ...
Two reporters from a tacky tabloid newspaper specialising in ... well, bullshit travel to a strange castle in Transylvania to investigate the apparent reappearance of Frankenstein's Monster. They end up not only crossing paths with the man-made monster of mad man, but also a sensitive Wolfman, a horny vampiress, a hard-working hunchback, a crazy scientist and other assorted weirdos, including an annoying butler played by Michael 'Kramer' Richards.
Something to sink your teeth into ...
It of course turns out that all the freaks from Transylvania, with their freaky appearance and freaky behavior, can be explained by actual medical conditions. The Wolfman, for example, suffers from hypertrichosis. A spoof on the classic horror themes, it is not surprising the film was written and directed by Rudy De Luca, a long-time collaborator with Mel Brooks, having co-written Silent Movie (1976), High Anxiety (1977) and Life Stinks (1994). But Transylvania 6-5000 is plays like a poor man's Mel Brooks movie.
