The synopsis goes something like this ...
It's a case of it being that time of the month for Ginger (Isabelle), the 16-year-old social outcast with an obsession with blood and death. On the night of her very first period, Ginger is coincidentally bitten by a werewolf, though it is not known which causes the sudden changes that occur to her and her body, such as becoming increasingly pissed off for no apparent reason. While the neighborhood dogs start turning up dead, Ginger's younger sister Brigitte (Perkins) tries to help her with her growing problems.
Something to sink your teeth into ...
Director Fawcett refused to have CGI effects in the film, opting for all of the special creature effects to be done with prosthetics and make-up.
Katharine Isabelle's monster make-up would take seven hours to apply and an additional two hours to remove after shooting. A cult hit, the film was followed by a sequel, Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed (2003), and a prequel, Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning (2004).
