Spider-Man

So the star, TOBEY MAGUIRE, and the director, SAM RAIMI, have finally been given the ass by Sony Pictures from the 'successful' SPIDER-MAN franchise. While the first two films (from 2002 and 2004) were some very fine cinema, the third (2007) was, to be blunt, a disgrace - a case of too many eggs in the one basket - despite it reeling in shitloads of people's hard-earned at the box-office, including yours truly.

Ironically, or moronically, former music video clip director MARC WEBB (500 DAYS OF SUMMER) has been pushed into the hot seat to take over from Raimi and helm a new Spidey picture, scheduled for a 2012 release, and most likely another bloody origin tale to kick off a new series - starring the most overexposed teen heart-throb producers can find as the title character.

A younger Peter Parker is wanted. After all Maguire is into his mid-30s now. But, 'it' names such as ZAC EFRON (HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL) and ROBERT PATTINSON (TWILIGHT) have been thrown up - and it makes me want to throw up. The producers may as well hand the role to MICHAEL CERA.

Fresh from PLEASANTVILLE (1998) and WONDERBOYS (2000), in which he sleeps with ROBERT 'IRONMAN' DOWNEY JNR, Maguire was perfect for the dweeby young Parker in the original. If the makers of the new SPIDER-MAN still want some dorkiness in their hero, no young actor has fine-tuned their nerdy awkward teen persona like Cera. So what about Cera the semi-buffed superhero nerdy awkward teen?

Whichever way they go - HIGH SCHOOL SPIDER-MAN, TWILIGHT SPIDER-MAN or SUPERBAD SPIDER-MAN - I'm not sure I will be that keen on watching the web-slinger this time around.
