7. THE SHAWSHANK MISERY

The Shawshank Redemption (1994), starring Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins, is arguably the most popular of all Stephen King movies about life in prison that takes some brilliantly-conceived twists and turns.

Number 1 on The Internet Movie Database's Top 250 for a reason, it was taken from King's short story called Rita Heyworth and Shawshank Redemption and adapted for the big screen by Frank Darabont, who would later go on to also direct The Green Mile (1999) and The Mist (2007). It was nominated for seven Oscars, but unfortunately didn't win any.

Another King movie favourite, Misery (1990) is renowned for Kathy Bates' Best Actress Oscar-winning performance as the ultimate psycho fan. Straight from the pages of King's own best-seller, Bates' Annie Wilkes rescues her favorite author, James Caan's Paul Sheldon, after a car accident and then keeps him locked up in her house so he can write the novel she wants.

The film is full of ankle-snapping fun, and was directed by Rob Reiner, who had just introduced Harry to Sally (1989), and also helmed The Princess Bride (1987) and earlier King adaptation Stand By Me (1986). Apparently he was inspired to direct a King story after watching The Shining (1980).

WHAT IF? If oversexed fellow inmates, pushy guards and a domineering warden wasn't enough for Tim Robbins' Andy Dufresne to deal with, wait until he is forced to share a cell with Annie Wilkes. What she is doing in a men's prison is really not important.
